Choco Late

The History of Chocolate

The history of cocoa and chocolate is an exciting journey through time and cultures.
For over 3000 years the wondrous fruit of a tree with its various botanical features is well known for processing and use.

The Olmec culture was the first to be brought in connection with cacao., The word "Kakawa" was part of their vocabulary, which was later adopted by the Maya and which has remained nearly unchanged till this day as "Cocoa or Cocoa". The cocoa traversed with great meaning almost all cultures of Latin and South America, always in liquid form, prepared as a hot chocolate, often stired until foamy and was reserved for the upper classes for enjoyment and for healing and divination.

Not for nothing is the botanical name of the cacao tree "Theobroma", translated as "food of the gods" (Theos = God, Broma = food), regardless of the culture - Mayan, Aztec or Inca - the cocoa pod was seen in all of these ancient cultures as a divine gift.

The delicious drink was called "Xocolatl" by the Aztecs and on its way to Europe it  changed to its present name Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!
